Drying Walls

The porous and absorbent nature of drywall means that water will soak into the wall and beyond, ruining the interior and exterior. This includes the drywall, molding, insulation, studding, and possibly electrical – depending on the amount of water absorbed. Paneled walls, walls with wallpaper, and even cinderblock or concrete walls are all susceptible to severe damage when water is allowed to absorb and remain.

When walls become wet, the water penetrates the surface and affects the materials inside. This can lead to warping, which is the distortion or bending of the wall surface due to changes in moisture levels.

Swelling is another common issue that can occur when walls become wet. This occurs when the moisture causes the materials in the walls to expand, leading to a bulging or swelling of the surface.

Both Swelling & Warping can cause the walls to become uneven and cause cracks and breaks in the surface. In severe cases it can make fasteners come loose, compromising the structural integrity of the wall.

In addition, moisture trapped in walls can create the ideal conditions for mold growth, which can have serious health implications and be difficult to remove once it takes hold.

Drying Cabinets

Water typically affects cabinets even more quickly and dramatically than it does walls.  This is because unlike your walls, the non-visible bones of your cabinets are typically made of composite materials that more readily absorb the water.  These materials are also more prone to swelling when wet.

Wet cabinets, if they’re not dried quickly and effectively, will swell, warp, and ultimately lose their structural integrity.

Because the cabinets are often made of particle board or press board, there are also more surface areas for mold to grow.  Additionally, those who use the cabinets are more likely to come in contact with the mold because we access the cabinets frequently.
