What Smoke Damage Actually Is

Smoke is not a single substance — it is a complex mixture of particles, gases, and chemical compounds produced by the incomplete combustion of materials. When a structure fire occurs, smoke consists of fine particles of carbon (soot), combustion gases including carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and volatile organic compounds, and aerosols from the specific materials that burned — which in a home or business setting can include plastics, synthetic fabrics, wood, paint, insulation, and many other materials, each of which produces its own unique and often toxic combustion byproducts.
