A line of storms rolls through in October, wind lifts a few shingles, and now there’s a soft spot on the ceiling. Roof leak water damage rarely announces itself. It starts in the attic and works downward for days before a stain appears.
Fall is hard on roofs here. Wind, heavy rain, and falling branches loosen shingles and flashing that were already near the end of their life.
How does a roof leak spread?
Water enters at the damaged spot, then follows the path of least resistance. It runs along rafters and trusses, soaks the insulation, and pools above the ceiling drywall.
That means the leak you see on the ceiling is often several feet from the actual roof opening. The water traveled to get there.
What are the early signs?
- Dark spots or sagging on the ceiling, especially after rain.
- Damp or matted attic insulation.
- A musty smell in upstairs rooms or closets.
- Granules from shingles in your gutters or downspout splash.
What should you do first?
Speed decides how bad this gets. Wet drywall and insulation can grow mold in a day or two.
- Contain the water. Put a bucket under an active drip and poke a small hole in a bulging ceiling to drain it safely.
- Get the roof covered. A tarp stops the next storm from adding to the damage.
- Call for drying. Our crews remove wet insulation and dry the framing with our structural drying process.
- Save the flooring below. Water that dropped through the ceiling soaks carpet and wood — our carpet drying and wood floor drying teams can often save both.
Fast drying is what prevents the second disaster: mold. The CDC notes that damp indoor spaces invite mold growth within days (CDC on mold). Our certified technicians follow IICRC drying standards on every job.
If the ceiling and flooring both took on water, our complete water damage repair service carries the job from extraction through rebuild. We serve Granite City, Alton, and the full Metro East.
